Abstract: CCC 2022 proudly presents the plenary panel session on Emerging Topics in Intelligent Autonomous Systems. We are honored that four young and active scholars in the field will join this panel to share their expertise and experience, and to discuss challenges and opportunities in the development of intelligent autonomous systems in general. Through direct dialog with our panelists, we aim to gain a deeper insight into some fundamental and emerging problems in the field. It will also serve as a platform for exchanging ideas and debating general issues in control, automation, and the applications of artificial intelligence.

The panel consists of the following four world class researchers and educators.

Xiwang Dong received the Ph.D. degree in Control Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2014. He has been a Research Fellow with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, from 2014 to 2015, a Lecturer and an Associate Professor with the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China from 2014 to 2018. Currently, he is a Full Professor and an Associate Dean at Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Beihang University, Beijing, China. His research focuses on cooperative control of multi-agent systems, intelligent control of swarm systems, and distributed control UAV swarm systems. He is the first author or corresponding author of more than 70 referred international journal papers (6 ESI Highly Cited Papers), receiving more than 2000 non-self SCI citations with H-index 23 according to Web of Science. He serves as the Associate Editor and an Editorial Board Member of several journals.

Dr. Dong was the recipient of the Best Paper Award of IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation (IEEE ICCA) in 2018, Best Paper Award of IEEE Guidance, Navigation and Control Conference (IEEE GNCC) in 2018, the Young Author Prize of IEEE CSS Beijing Chapter (CCC) in 2019, and the Springer Outstanding Thesis Award in 2015. He was the recipient of the First Prize of Innovation Award of Chinese Institute of Command and Control in 2019. He was the Top Reviewer of Asian Journal of Control (2016) and the Outstanding Reviewer of Journal of the Franklin Institute (2017). He was selected in the “Young Elite Scientists Sponsorship Program” by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in 2017 and was awarded a National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars in 2019.

Hao Fang received Ph.D. degrees from Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2002. He held two Post-Doctoral appointments at the INRIA/France Research Group of COPRIN and the LASMEA (UNR6602 CNRS/Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, France). Since 2011, he has been a Professor with the Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China. His current research interests include multi-robot, robotic control.

He won the Second Prize of National Natural Science Awards in 2014, First Prize of Technological Invention of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2020, First Prize of Natural Science Award of the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2013. He is Member of Technical Committee on Control Theory and serves as secretary-general of Multi-Agent Cooperative Control Group of TCCT. He is the Associate Editors-in-Chief of Control Theory & Applications, editorial board member of Unmanned Systems, Journal of Systems Science and Mathematical Sciences.

Zhi Gao is currently a full professor, doctoral supervisor at the School of Remote Sensing and Information Engineering, Wuhan University. He has been supported by the National Young Talents Program and the grant for Distinguished Young Scientists of Hubei Province. In addition, he is also a Chutian Scholar Distinguished Professor of Hubei Province. Dr. Gao received the B.Eng. and the Ph.D. degrees from Wuhan University, China, in 2002 and 2007, respectively. In 2008, he joined the Interactive and Digital Media Institute, National University of Singapore (NUS), as a Research Fellow (A) and Project Manager. From 2014 to his return to China, he worked in the Temasek Laboratories in NUS (TL@NUS) as a Research Scientist (A) and PI. He joined Wuhan University with current position in October 2019.

Dr. Gao has strong research background in computer vision, autonomous unmanned systems and remote sensing. In particular, he has influential research in the area of vision for intelligent system and intelligent system-based vision. In terms of vision for intelligent system, he mainly focuses on robust ego-motion estimation under challenge scenarios, including LiDAR-vision fusion for localization and visual SLAM in bad weather. In terms of intelligent system-based vision, his research includes camouflage object detection and tracking in complex scenes, object detection with weakly supervision and few samples, and UAV-based surveillance applications. Professor Gao has published more than 80 research papers which have been published in IJCV, IEEE PAMI, IEEE TIP, IEEE ITS, IEEE TCSVT, ISPRS JPRS, IEEE TGRS, CVPR, ECCV, ACCV, IROS, ICRA, and other top journals and conferences. He has been invited as the keynote speaker for more than ten international conferences or forums, and now serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Unmanned Systems.

Tao Yang is a Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Synthetical Automation for Process Industries, Northeastern University, China. He was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of North Texas, Denton, USA, from 2016-2019.
